This is a message from Matushka JoAnne Laymon:
The Iconography Guild of St. Theodosia meets monthly to practice the Russian-Byzantine techniques taught by the Prosopon School of Iconology. Our mentor and teacher is Fr. Igumen Mefodii, master iconographer of the school and hieromonk at the Skete of St. Maximos the Confessor in Palmyra, Virginia. He conducts our annual September workshops and visits our guild for occasional mini-workshops, such as for color studies and faces.
We meet at St. Herman of Alaska Orthodox Church, 60 Clifton Chapel Lane in Stafford, VA in the Christ the Savior Fellowship Hall near I-95 South of the Quantico Marine Base.
We meet the first or second Saturday of each month. Our next meetings will be December 6, 2014 and January 10, 2015 from 12:30–4:oopm. We share our resources, supplies, tips, support for each other in both our practice and spiritual journey, beginning with the iconographer’s prayer. Following a brief and informal business meeting, we have a show and tell period of presenting ideas for activities, displaying our works in progress and relating icon related news. We work quietly on our studies, sharing what we have learned from each other. We introduce iconography to both visitors and new members by helping them begin a practice icon and explaining the steps in process. Occasionally we have demonstrations by one of our advanced students, such as recently those on water gilding and applying olipha. Members may borrow books, DVD’s, and articles from our growing library.
Our next Prosopon workshop led by Fr. Mefodii will be held September 7–12, 2015 and is designed for all skill levels.
